Description:
Dr. Wendell G. Rayburn served as the eighth president of Savannah State University. He served as president from 1980 – 1988. Under his administration the Desegregation Plan was implemented which was mandated by the Georgia Board of Regents. There was a major growth of buildings on the campus during his tenure. Under his administration, Rayburn developed a grievance procedure manual for the college and established tenure and promotion review procedures. He created a strategic long-range planning process in order to set goals for the college. He also modified the mission so it could reflect the new urban mission and he brought in new academic programs such as the Master of Public Administration program and the New Liberal Arts program. Under Rayburn’s administration, the college received accreditation for the Social Work program and the Athletic program was enhanced.
